From the trailhead, the trail meanders through some pine and spruce forest. The going is quite easy, providing cool shade in the summer (it's my observation the forests are quite neglected though and in need of controlled fires to clean them up). As the forest and trail opens up, it provides refreshing views of forests below. Eventually, you will trail the edge of the rim face, climbing constantly to the top where you will meet the rim trail/road.
