Although this hike doesn't look difficult on "paper", it does have nearly 2000ft of elevation gain due to 4 climbs. The trailhead starts across from the Canyon Lake Marina parking, clearly signed just after the 2nd bridge on the right.
From the start, you will begin climbing up the first pass/mountain. This climb will take you over largest elevation gain, climbing around 600ft in 1.3 miles. At the top, you will have very nice views over the Cayon Lake and oncoming Superstition wilderness!
You will continue on the ridge with mild ups and downs. There are several lookout points along the way, do take time to enjoy them, the views overlook the Weaver's Needle, Battleship Rock and many others.
Eventually you will start descending into the first and main valley. The creek, which flows during the wet season, is about 500ft down and 3/4 of the mile away.
Just beyond the creek, you will climb a short pass leading to an indian clay pit which has other more modern structures around it. A short descent will follow to another/final creek crossing. When we were there during the 2013 wet season, this second creek had more water and tranquil pools than the first crossing.
Once you are ready to head back, simply follow the same trail back. The second/final climb seems endless so have plenty of water!
