lease note this route combines 2 of the park's trails: Go John and Overton Trails. They can be done individually with Go John being 5.8 miles and Overton Trail 3.3 miles each.
Since we are combining these 2 trails to form the large loop, you will want to take the Go John Trail loop counter-clockwise starting near the SE corner of the parking lot.
The trail starts out pretty level but does start climbing and descending over a few smaller passes. You will be hiking the ridge lines around the tallest peak of the park to your left (3060 ft).
Near the half way point, you will descend into a wash where you will see a boundary/gate with the Maricopa Trail system leading to the Spur Cross trails (also on this site; about 4 miles away).
Around the 4 mile point is the intersection with the Overton Trail. You can either make a left to finish the shorter Go John Trail loop, or make a right and continue to hike along the Overton Trail forming the large loop.
As you descend along the way, you will come to the Clay Mine turn off, which is less than a mile away. Continue on the Overton Trail, passing the parking lots to the main parking lot, to finish the loop.
