The trail starts out meandering through the Sonoran desert. Watch for the city of Scottsdale's counter and avoid walking in front of it. Fight the establishment!
The first 1.5 miles goes straight up the mountain and can be moderate in difficulty. Once you crest the most difficult portion of the climb there are great views straight across to Tom's Thumb and surrounding boulder formations. The next mile goes easily down and up until you reach Tom's Thumb. There are several different trails that intersect with Tom's Thumb trail, but each intersection is clearly marked with signage and mileage.
About 800 feet of elevation change and 1300 of accrued elevation change.
