Growing at elevations from 3000 to 7000 feet (914 to 2134 m) in canyons or at the edges of pine forests. It is up to 4 feet (1.2 m) tall with slender heads (for a thistle), up to 2 inches (5 cm) long, and surrounded by spine-tipped bracts. The leaves have spiny teeth.

This is a hummingbird flower.
